Amphi Festival 2012: Viva Music Review, Jul-21&22, Cologne

Amphi Festival took over Cologne’s Tanzbrunnen for the 8th time! With a very clever choice of acts, and overall perfect organization, Amphi stated once more its position as one of the central events for the electro and industrial scenes. As it often happens, a sold-out event weeks before its start, Amphi Festival provided quality entertainment, very good facilities and considerable fuel for a crowd of almost two score of thousands. With early starts on both festival days, both on Saturday Jul-21 and Sunday Jul-22, the festival comforted the audience with a solid palette of both on the outdoor main stage and in the nearby Staatenhaus, as well as alternative entertainment in the Theater building. If you add to the set of concerts the wide array of stands, facilities, areas (including the famed beach zone), you could have practically spent a whole festival day just digging through bargains and taking your time in front of quite varied meals and still call it a full day. Or day and night! Because after countless concerts in the various venues of the area, DJ sets went on until the early hours of morn. But as a yearly convention of already sufficient stance, Amphi Festival meant, of course, a probe of temperature and color in today’s scene, and if audience reactions stand for anything, we’re all good, the entertainment is still varied, the ethos of the scene is still valid and vivid, people still feel the urge to dress up and make a stand, and the music sounds as good as ever.

Viva Music would like to take a minute to thank for the opportunity to be there and enjoy Amphi Festival 2012 to: the flawless clockwork organizing team, to the numberless artists and tech personnel who made concerts happen, and to the beating heart of the audience, which keeps our scene alive and kicking. And if you missed Amphi Festival this year, put these two things down on your to-do list: (1) read our act-by-act review and browse the individual photo galleries; (2) book in time your Amphi Festival 2013 experience: with tickets already on sale this coming week on Aug-01, and the first acts to be confirmed on Aug-13. Amphi Festival 2013 will take place on Jul-20 and Jul-21 in Tanzbrunnen Cologne. (more…)

Blackfield Festival 2012 – Jun-23&24 – Gelsenkirchen: Viva Music Review with Photos

Blackfield Festival celebrated its fifth edition with a first-time sold-out arena on Jun-23&24 in Gelsenkirchen. In the already traditional Amphitheater of Gelsenkirchen, the festival was set up as a middle-sized event to the minutest of details. Not only the amphitheater was made-to-fit the crowd and its access to and fro, but it provided excellent venue facilities. All bands were rigorous about their stage time and the schedule allowed everyone to be entertained by a musical diversity which was at the same time well-thought and respectful of people’s tastes and interests. The setup of the festival was complemented by a large array of facilities and the food served met all tastes. Add to that the number of shops for gear and clothing, jewelry and fragrances, as well as the wonderful medieval fair, and you tick all the boxes of a dream festival. Unfortunately, the weather was not so welcoming, but however, did not actually impact the audience, who stood against a first day of scorching sun and wind, and a second day of drenching rain and dark skies.

Viva Music’s presence at the festival was enriching and educational – we have of course met before decent and respectful organization of events, and Blackfield is one of the festivals which actually commit to people’s well-being while on the premises, but we were constantly overwhelmed by the friendliness of space, people, and concept of the festival. So our thanks go to the Blackfield organizing team, to our fellow artists, journalists and music fans – with them, the event felt like a blessing, and within minutes of its end, we would have started this experience all over again! In terms of musical variety, Amphi Festival 2012 stands out a mile

Amphi Festival 2012 news keep on coming, and we are very happy, since it’s one of the events we are really looking forward to this summer. Musical diversity gives the extra finishing touches to the superb lineup of the festival. Already announced, The Sisters of Mercy, And One, Eisbrecher, Blutengel, Apoptygma Berzerk, Project Pitchfork, Combichrist, Camouflage, Front Line Assembly, DAF, Mono Inc., Corvus Corax, Nachtmahr, Assemblage 23, Solar Fake, 18 Summers, Coppelius, [:SITD:], Haujobb, Stahlzeit, Seabound, Aesthetic Perfection, A Life Divided, [X]-RX, Tyske Ludder, Whispers in the Shadow, The Other, Eisenfunk, Schoengeist, Lord of the Lost – and many others. Today’s news? Three more acts, and what acts, if we may say so: mind.in.a.box, Love Is Colder than Death and Eklipse – the latter being the name of the seductive quartet, which loves to clothe contemporary pop music and soundtrack elements into a fascinating dress of compelling classic string sounds on our Theater-stage. Without vocals, yet even more emotional and spiced up with an extra portion of sex-appeal, the four ladies interpret songs by Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Hurts, Depeche Mode and many more, cunningly flavored with a magic note of dark-lascivious romanticism, wit and dreamy melancholy.

Also in the news today:  Amphi Festival warmup parties – they are numberless! and great occasions to meet other Amphi enthusiasts, plan your trips and get in the mood for the festival, if need be. Apr-07: Paris, Apr-08: Amstelveen, Apr-14: Brighton, Apr-28: Stuttgart, Apr-28: Thessaloniki, Apr-28: Antwerpen; Apr-28: Karlsruche, May-04: Manchester, May-05:  Northampton, May-09: Wuppertal, May-12: London, May-16: Heidelberg, May-19: Krefeld, May-19: Zuerich, May-19: Vienna, May-24: Duisburg, May-25: Bonn, May-25: Bielefeld, Jun-02: Frankfurt, Jun-02: Essen, Jun-02: Augsburg, Jun-03: Dresden, Jun-09: Bonn, Jun-09: Bremen, Jun-16: Siegen, Jun-21: Oberhausen, Jun-22: Athens, Jun-29: London, Jun-30: Ingolstadt, Jul-20: Cologne.

Eisbrecher “Die Hoelle muss warten” – Out Feb-14 – Viva Music Album Review

Tracklist: “Tanz mit mir” * “Augen unter Null” * “Die Hoelle muss warten” * “Verrueckt (Original Version)” * “Herz aus Eis” * “Prototyp” * “Ein Leben lang unsterblich” * “Abgrund” * “In meinem Raum” * “Keine Liebe” * “Exzess Express” * “Rette mich” * “Atem” * “Treiben” * “Verrueckt (Combichrist Remix)

About “Die Hoelle muss warten:

The unexpected Ice Age that seized the music world in 2002 continues as Eisbrecher masterminds Alexx Wesselsky and Noel Pix return for another classic release that is sure to cause waves in both the electronic and metal scenes. After a successful run of tours and festival appearances in Europe including Alice Cooper’s ‘Theatre of Death Tour’ and The Nova Rock Festival, Eisbrecher is poised to once again conquer the US clubs and charts. Heavier and harder than ever before, “Die Hoelle muss warten” features an expertly crafted blend of crushing guitars, menacing vocals, and melodic synth lines. Not one to stay the course, Eisbrecher also shows its ability to incorporate modern influences and blend them into songs that stay uniquely Eisbrecher, such as the dubstep-tinged “Herz aus Eis.” The album’s opener “Tanz mit mir” is a perfect example of what modern industrial rock should sound like, while tracks such as “Rette mich” slow things down and feature frontman Alex’s crooning voice over beautiful synth melodies. With such a diverse range of influences and perfect production quality, “Die Hoelle muss warten” is another step forward for a band that has already established itself as one of the premier electronic rock acts of our time. Eisbrecher – “VerruecktOfficial Video:

Eisbrecher – “Die Hoelle muss warten” – Viva Music Album Review:

Coming Feb-14 from Metropolis Records, the new album from Eisbrecher entitled “Die Hoelle muss warten” (English: “Hell must wait”) was preceded by the release on Jan-20 of the single preview track “Verrueckt” accompanied by a very pertinent Combichrist remix! Add to that the “Verrueckt” video, which is classy and really enticing – and we have the ingredients of high expectations from an album that proved, even on first listening to it, a great addition to this year’s EBM and industrial loot.  (more…)

Inure “This Is the Life” Viva Music Album Review

Tracklist: “This Is the Life (Album Version)” * “This Is the Life (Vogel Remix)” * “This Death (Terrolokaust Remix)” * “This Is the Life (Aesthetic Perfection Remix)” * “This Is the Life (WhiteQube Remix)” * “Le Petit Mort (16volt Remix)” * “This Is the Life (Imperative Reaction Remix)

About Inure – “The Offering” (forthcoming album):

Inure‘s third full length release, “The Offering” wields an even heavier edge than past efforts. With production by Imperative Reaction’s Ted Phelps, Moore has given rise to the band’s most diverse and compelling work to date. Adam Moore‘s vocals weave together the haunted, distant shouts of classic European EBM with the raw aggression of American industrial rock while staunch industrial rhythms fuse with the furious riffs of Adam Vex (Imperative Reaction) on guitar. It’s this fusion that truly sets “The Offering” apart. With special guest appearances from Joe Letz (Combichrist) and Eric Powell (16Volt), “The Offering” grabs hold from the first dissonant note of “This Death” until it releases you to the icy depths of “Cold.” (source: press release)

Album tracklist: “This Death” * “The Call” * “Rapture” * “This Is the Life” * “The Strange” * “All Alone”* “The Offering” * “The Mind Killer” * “So Far Away” * “Cold

Inure “This Is the Life” (digital single) – Viva Music Review:

Out with Metropolis Records one month prior to the release of their third album, “The Offering”, the new single from Inure, entitled “This Is the Life” is a very provocative and appetizing selection of music, one that sets very high expectations from the forthcoming album. With a catchy title and a running order of artists who collaborated for the single remixes that is bound to make you curious, the single is an energetic and danceable industrial rock/electronic compilation. Aesthetic Perfection, Imperative Reaction, Terrolokaust remixes are votes of confidence for the new track and by extension for the new album, and given the fact that the original track is definitely worth more than one listen, it is with these new nuances and statements that other musicians make via the remixes that the true value of the song is highlighted. Imperative Reaction’s remix is possibly the most driven one, while the one crafted by Aesthetic Perfection deepens the darker shades and the symbolism of the track. Of equal perspective are the other remixes as well, with the Vogel one taking you by surprise with just how versatile a track can be. And if the main track of the digital single release is about life, the band thought wise to supplement the compilation with a track which are conversely about death; the preview remix of the forthcoming album song “This Death” with a vicious, penetrating Terrolokaust remix, as well as a renamed version, “Le Petit Mort” by 16volt, with a hoppier beat, but nevertheless proving to be a sound alternative that does justice to the dimensions of the track.

After the preview offered by the single release we are bound to impatiently wait for the album release. Luckily we are one month away from the release date. Enjoy!

2011 was a great year for our scene. Just a quick roundup of the acts and artists who released new material this year is sufficient to give you an impression, however fleeting, of the great tumult the scene has caused and the important additions 2011 has brought to our playlists. Let us not forget the beautiful events we were invited to attend, and had the pleasure to experience in 2011. We provided detailed footage both under the guise of reviews and photo galleries at Amphi Festival (+), Nordstern Festival (+), and Nocturnal Culture Night (+). In 2012, we intend to attend to more such events and keep you posted on our beautiful and dynamic scene.

As Viva Music we also organized our own events in Bucharest.
