It is always a pleasure to gain access to the hidden vault of a band. This is what Noyce TM did with a July 2011 release with In-D Records of their newest compilation, “Past:ique” (1,000 copies, limited edition).  The name, a play upon words recycling their first 1998 single’s name, “Panique“, their liberal use of the colon, and the word pastiche, uses up already known material in an innovative way, creating new or extended versions of their discography in order to re-create the same life-is-a-dream, spectacular feeling of sleep- or coma-walking through ravaging circumstances of life. Not being willing to give up on their dark, yet tender and caring view on humanity, Noyce TM give voice through “Past:ique” to new emotions, new perspectives on their music, and betray a very solid body of work behind the end product of their creativity. Compact Space “Nameless” Viva Music Album Review

Tracklist: “Push Push” * “Who Says It’s Real?” * “The Unstoppable Collision” * “Red Alert” * “Lonely Star” * “Don’t Look Back” * “My Other Life” * “Reverse Happiness” * “Where a Boy Used to Be” * “Don’t Look Back (Extended – Bonus Track)” * “The Unstoppable Collision (Extended – Bonus Track)

About Compact Space:

Compact Space are: Christian Eigner, Daryl Bamonte, Florian Kraemer.

Supergroups are always intriguing musical phenomena, and Compact Space is no exception to this rule. A winning band, Compact Space comes as the united artistic effort of three individuals with their own share of fame, and who, more importantly, are not up with a first collaboration, having worked before in various arrangements. Christian Eigner, a well-known figure for the Depeche Mode fanbase, who has been around in the DM Universe since 1997, is not only live drummer, backing vocalist and keyboardist for the band; but also contributed with his writing to numerous tracks both for Depeche Mode and Dave Gahan. His creative input has been always lauded by fans and reviewers; and the same goes for Daryl Bamonte, who worked just like Christian Eigner with Depeche Mode and additionally with The Cure; what’s more, Daryl manages among other artists and acts Christian Eigner as a solo musician. It is in this capacity of solo musician that Eigner met the last of the Compact Space crowd, Florian Kraemer, who did the vocals for Eigner’s solo 2005 album “Recovery” alongside Barca Baxant. How does their trio work? “The trio shares creative equality when they work on their songs. Daryl writes the lyrics, Florian develops the melodies and Christian puts together the powerful music that marks Compact Space with their own unmistakable style as soon as you listen to them.” Although their first single “Push Push” was released with sufficient buzz via iTunes in October 2009, an increasing crowd of Compact Space-curious listeners was to wait 20 months more before the release of their debut album, “Nameless”, including 9 original tracks (one of which featuring Martin L. Gore) and 2 extended versions, delivered in June this year.

Compact Space – “Nameless” – Viva Music album review:

Nameless” is an album bound to gather numerous positive nods from critics and even more numerous listens. With an impeccable sound and a good drive throughout the entire album, “Nameless” is a top-shelf choice for the aficionados of synthpop, and definitely a good side listening material for all Depeche Mode fans. “Push Push” is a very good piece, and even if listened inside the “Nameless” equation it gives out the same feeling like the one back when it was released as a teasing single. A dreamy, groovy piece, “Push Push” is a very melodic chant and a great induction to the album. As expected, but excellently so, the Dave Gahan/Depeche Mode feel becomes relevant and the password to “Who Says It’s Real?”, a very appealing track with great vibes and melancholic voice, an overall excellent production that really raises the expectation levels for the remainder of the album. About The Pain Machinery:

Having experimented with electronic sounds since the late 1980’s, Anders Karlsson released his first work as The Pain Machinery in 1992. The initial idea was to mix the raw energy of UK street punk and the sound exploring possibilities of electro/industrial music. Later joined by vocalist Jonas Hedberg, The Pain Machinery has continued to expand on their original formula through the years. The band, frequently described as the missing link between punk, house and EBM, has gained a lasting reputation for their intense and physical live shows around Europe. (source).

The Pain Machinery – “Surveillance Culture” – Viva Music Album Review:

Surveillance Culture” is a heavy, cursive and straightforward album, the latest release from THE PAIN MACHINERY with Complete Control Productions. With a narrative thread that speaks diligently about mind games and the illusion of freedom in civilizations kept under close scrutiny for the sake of self-taught democracy, the sound devised by THE PAIN MACHINERY on their new album is a cavalcade about broken promises, unrequited feelings, and obedience that harms the individual. Solar Fake – “Frontiers” – Out Today July-22 – Viva Music Review

I write about things that bother me or psych me out. These are usually negative impressions or experiences. I try to enjoy all the positive things happening to me and about all the rest I’m writing lyrics.” (Sven Friedrich, SOLAR FAKE)

Tracklist: “Under the Skies” * “Why Did I Raise the Fire” * “No Apologies” * “More than This” * “Parasites” * “Such a Shame” * “Where Are You” * “The Rising Doubt” * “Pain Goes by” * “Until I’m Back” * “The Line of Sight

About SOLAR FAKE:

The German electro act SOLAR FAKE, created by Sven Friedrich (of ZERAPHINE and DREADFUL SHADOWS fame) presents a really extraordinary work with their new album, “Frontiers”. Though three years have passed since the debut album “Broken Grid” was released, followers of Sven’s musical activities have pleasantly eased their waiting with the “Resigned” E.P. (2009), by SOLAR FAKE, and the album “Whiteout” (2010), by ZERAPHINE. Due to SOLAR FAKE supporting VNV Nation on their last tour and playing several festivals, they have attracted great attention, constantly increasing their number of fans, and not only amongst ZERAPHINE’s audience. What was indicated on “Broken Grid” and “Resigned” now finds a felicitous continuation in “Frontiers”: driving beats and danceable floor fillers melt with great melodies you can’t get out of your head once you hear them. Sven’s voice is multifaceted like never before, but still it’s the element connecting all eleven tracks to a whole complete work. (source)

SOLAR FAKE, “Frontiers” – Viva Music Album Review:

Very driving beats open up the perspective of the new album by SOLAR FAKE, “Frontiers” inside a very danceable track, “Under the Skies”. With great vocal exercise from a versatile vocalist such as Sven Friedrich, the track is memorable and not exceptionally so: the entire album provides excellent listening material. A dancefloor collectible, “Under the Skies” is closely followed on by a gem of a track, “Why Did I Raise the Fire”, the anthem texture of which intertwines straightforward electro and ineluctable industrial beats, and really makes for a great addition to any playlist. A Viva Music favorite, “No Apologies” comes up next with zest, but also with a very rewarding arrangement; to the effect that it stands out as a generous tribute to numerous red threads of our favorite music, from the music of the 1980’s to synthpop, and from electro to industrial music. Amphi Festival 2011 – 16&17-Jul, 2011 – Viva Music Review

Day One | Day Two | The Aftermath

Amphi Festival: Day One, Saturday, July-16: General Review | Mainstage | Staatenhaus

General Review

The fact that this year’s Amphi was going to be a success was obvious from the very beginning: people teemed in large numbers, and arrived to the venue earlier that last year. This meant that the first act, [X]-RX had an impressive audience for a first act on the main stage. A breathtaking experience, the 2011 edition of Amphi Festival made us yearn for next year’s festival already! And, as a side-note, given the enthusiasm and size of the audience, Cologne’s Tanzbrunnen may prove pretty soon to be too small a venue for such an excellent event.

Compared to 2010, the number of 2011 participants was significantly higher – a reason to the point might be the diverse lineup – from electronica to gothic, and from noise to darkwave – add to that the excellent entertainment offered in-between, the 100%-giving, outgoing performances of all acts, and needless to say, the tireless, party-oriented audience – all contributed to the overall success of the 2011 edition of Amphi Festival.
